deceived by sesame street...

...you know those moments that you always remember? doesn't matter if they happened 10 minutes ago or 25 years ago? (yikes!) the moment is crystal clear and pops up randomly in your head at odd, odd times.

one of those moments for me was sitting in complete and utter awe watching as maria and luis got married on sesame street so many moons ago. i thought she was the most beautiful bride i had ever seen. and then a couple of years later i can still remember the episode where maria was pregnant and craving something and it was big bird's job to help her discover what that something was. as clear as the sky today i remember the exact moment that they discovered it was coconut milk. crazy. crazy, because i can't even remember a simple conversation i had with tony an hour ago, so why i would remember things like this is beyond me...

so for what, 22 years (okay 23 years tomorrow - don't remind me!) i have believed that the only "pretend" things on sesame street were the puppets. everyone else was who they said they were. leave it to the today show to illuminate my naivete. maria is actually sophia who is in no way married to the guy who plays luis. sophia has just written a children's book and to help her sell more copies, the cover of this book says "maria from sesame street!"

and while i'm happy for her and her amazing ability to play one character for 35 years, i'm a little disconcerted. shouldn't you receive something once you've graduated from your sesame years to prepare you for the shock you'll face when you sit down to watch the show with your own daughter?

and still...my mind reels...
